In marketing terms a Landing Page is a term used to describe a standalone web page separate from your main website that has been designed for a single purpose.
A Landing page is not any old page on your website where visitor happen to land upon.
By standalone I mean that it has no links or navigation back to your main website, it essentially stands alone, only accessible from the link you’re providing in your marketing content. This can be a Call to Action in an Email Marketing campaign or PPC ad.
The Landing Page should have one focus so there is only a single action for your visitors to take. Click your call-to-action.
You should never start any marketing campaign without a landing page, because it allows you be focused on a single objective and makes analytics, reporting & testing a simpler task.
There are 2 main types of landing pages.
Lead Generating Landing Pages
Lead generation landing pages are used to obtain visitors information, such as a name and email address. The sole purpose of the page is to collect information that will allow you to market to and connect with the prospect at a future time. Because of this, these pages will contain a form and can contain text or video explaining what the visitor will get if they complete the form.
Click through Landing Pages
Click through landing pages (as the name implies) will normally have inducements to get the visitor to click through to another page. Sending visitors directly to your shopping cart might not have the desired effect and sending them first to a “warm up” or “click through” page can encourage potential customers to purchase.
